ILAC

October 18, 2013 – Meeting Notes

  1. Blueprint – confirmation that all members have agreed and signed.

  2. Updates from Assessment Steering Committee

    1. Assessment canvas course

      • Some discussion about our contribution and what expectation may be. Awaiting Assessment Steering Committee guidance and parameters (Ann noted they have yet to determine standards); however, ideas discussed were:

  1. Moving over content from the wiki site

  2. Creating training material like how to interpret the rubric

  3. Building pre-/post-tests in Canvas for others to easily copy (export to their courses)

  4. Ann and Christine can add info lit materials already available from Library’s Faculty Resources guide (and other tools, such as the Research Assignment Planning Checklist)

    1. Syllabus statement about assessment

      • Elena engaged us in a critical thinking-highlighting exercise to examine sample statements (from EMCC, PC, and Honors) about gen ed outcomes for faculty to include on syllabi. Delightfully, most of us highlighted the exact same things. Elena then led us through drafting a composite statement she will share with the Steering Committee.

    2. Spring activity, “You have data, now what?”

      • Scheduled for Friday, Feb. 28, for 11:30 am to 2pm (includes approx.. 45 minutes for lunch). Pending further info from Steering Committee.

    3. Possible changes to assessment committee structure. 1 assessment committee and 14 department assessment coordinators. Gen ed area committees such as ILAC will become obsolete but committee members are encouraged to remain involved through departments.

  1. Updates from any other departments doing Info Lit Assessment?

  • English – Having assessed ENG101/102 last year, the department has been looking most specifically at questions for which scores dropped between 101 and 102. Hershman reported that most, if not all, English faculty will be scheduling at least one library session per semester.

  • Counseling – they are designing instrument for assessing one-on-one sessions with students (referrals to social services, for instance). Elena met with counseling faculty the week of Sept. 16 to discuss further. Jan Binder also attended.

  • Behavioral Science – Marian informed Andrea that things are going just fine.

  • Biology – Christine observed that all the BIO181 sections are doing pre-tests before library lab sessions. Elena will follow-up to see what other courses are doing??

  • Liberal Arts – they continue to interpret their results.

  • Health/Wellness – Elena called to their dept meeting Sept 30

  • Communication, ASL, Education – they are looking at info literacy. CRE courses, though, will only be looking at critical thinking.

In attendance: Elena Ortiz, Ann Rosselle, Hershman John, Andrea Villareal, Bev Bruner, Amanda Chapman, Christine Moore
